Blog FAQ Login. Dean Benedict Okethwengu Updated: 16 Aug, Women Won't Wait, a Nebbi-based human rights organization, has said the number of teenage sex workers in Nebbi Town Council is on the increase.
On Saturday, the organization held a closed-door meeting with the teen sex workers, as a way of understanding the trend and finding a viable solution to the problem. Angela Anyolitho, chairperson of Women Won't Wait, says that during the meeting, it was discovered that more girls between the ages of 13 and 16 are joining commercial sex work. She says this development is the result of numerous factors like poverty, the breakdown of traditional family mentoring systems and neglect.
Anyolitho says a more worrying trend is the general ignorance among the girls about their rights under the law and their ignorance about exposure to HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. She says the teen sex workers do not demand that their customer use condoms and they take no proactive steps to protect themselves against disease. During the meeting, the sex workers presented a statement to the Nebbi District Probation Officer, Oweki Jal Manwang, and requested him to submit it to the district leadership on their behalf.
In the statement they said they were not willing participants in the sex trade. They said many of them were orphans or came from highly impoverished homes. With no money and few options, they joined the business. The teenage sex workers, who were about 30, blamed government for their woes. They said if government provided jobs for the unemployed, they would have sought alternative sources of income.
